Jefferson Garden Club has awarded June Yard of the Month honors to Doug and LeAnn Monaghan who live in the 700 block of S. Chestnut St.
In their vast yard, of almost an acre of land, grow an abundance of flowers. A few of these in the front and side yard are salvia, lilies, dianthus, daisy, and honeysuckle bushes.
The back yard has beautiful hostas, lilac bushes, peonies, hydrangeas, purple cone flowers and a large bed of lily of the valley. An original foundation of a chicken coop is in place as well as a corn crib with bittersweet climbing up the side. An old time metal swing set still stands. Many types of trees including magnolia grow nearby.
In the midst of this there’s a vegetable garden. LeAnn enjoys canning and making salsa.
The Monaghans added a pond and bench near the back of their house. Doug and LeAnn see yard work as therapy and stay outdoors long into the evening.
